5-10 January 1943:

With MAIKAZE attached, Desdiv 17 escorted troop convoy (Operation 18: BRAZIL MARU, NICHIRYU MARU, CLYDE MARU, CHIFUKU MARU and MYOKO MARU, lifting units of 51st Division) from Rabaul to Lae and back. On 7-8 January NICHIRYU MARU and MYOKO MARU lost in bombing attacks. Then to Shortlands on 13 January.

14 January:

Troop transport run to Guadalcanal. Minor damage: in air attacks on 15 January due to near-misses.

16-26 January:

Departed Shortlands for repairs at Rabaul, then returned.

28 January:

Troop transport run to Russell Islands.

1 February:

Troop evacuation run to Guadalcanal.

4 February:

Troop evacuation run to Guadalcanal.

7 February:

Troop evacuation run to Russell Islands (cover); then to Rabaul on 8 February.

st Division) from Palau to Wewak and back. On return voyage steamed ahead to reach Palau one day before the rest of the convoy.

8-17 May:

With AMATSUKAZE and Subchaser No. 34, escorted troop convoy (Wewak No. 4: TEIRYU MARU, No. 3 YOSHIDA MARU, TOHO MARU, MAYA MARU, and ARATAMA MARU, lifting units of 41
st Division) from Palau to Wewak and back.

23 May-2 June:

With AMATSUKAZE, escorted troop convoy (Hansa No. 3: HOFUKU MARU, No. 1 SHINSEI MARU, DENMARK MARU, SHINYU MARU and No. 13 HAKUTETSU MARU, lifting units of 20
th Division) from Palau to Hansa Bay and back. On return voyage steamed ahead to reach Palau one day before the rest of the convoy.

5-15 June:

With AMATSUKAZE, escorted troop convoy (Wewak No. 5: MAYA MARU, No. 3 YOSHIDA MARU, BENGAL MARU, and HAKKA MARU, lifting units of 41
st Division) from Palau to Wewak and back. During return voyage convoy joined by auxiliary gunboat KAZAN MARU.

21 June-2 July:

With AMATSUKAZE, escorted troop convoy (Hansa No. 4: DENMARK MARU, NAGANO MARU, KANKO MARU, YUBAE MARU and SHINYU MARU, lifting units of 20
th Division) from Palau to Hansa Bay and back.

5-17 July:

With AMATSUKAZE and SHIRATAKA, escorted troop convoy (Wewak No. 6: BENGAL MARU, No. 3 YOSHIDA MARU, No. 1 SHINSEI MARU, MAYA MARU and TOHO MARU, lifting units of 41
st Division) from Palau to Wewak and back. On return voyage towed disabled TOHO MARU back to Palau.

19-24 July:

With AMATSUKAZE, escorted convoy from Palau to Truk.

25 July-1 August:

With AMATSUKAZE, escorted convoy from Truk to Kure, then docked for repairs.

20 August:
Commander Iwagami (to Comdesdiv 7, later Comdesdiv 52) relieved by Commander Yoshida Shooichi [52] (prev. C.O. ARIAKE).

7-11 September:

Escorted TAIYO and CHUYO from Yokosuka to Truk.

18-25 September:

Escorted fleet from Truk to Eniwetok in response to U.S. carrier raids in the Central Pacific, then returned.

17-26 October:

Escorted fleet from Truk to Eniwetok in anticipation of further U.S. carrier raids, then returned.

1-4 November:

Initially with ISOKAZE, escorted troop convoy (2
nd section of Operation T4: NAKA, ISUZU, GOKOKU MARU and KIYOZUMI MARU, lifting units of 17th Division) from Truk to Rabaul. On 3 November air attacks left KIYOZUMI MARU dead in the water. GOKOKU MARU and URAKAZE continued on to Rabaul while remainder diverted to Kavieng.

6 November:

Cape Torokina counter-landing: troop transport run to Bougainville (cover).

11 November:

Minor damage: in air raid on Rabaul, due to strafing.

11-15 November:

Escorted AGANO from Rabaul to Truk; on 11 November removed wounded Comdesron 10 (Rear Admiral Osugi Morikazu [41]) from the torpedoed cruiser.

30 November-5 December:

With USHIO, SAZANAMI, and AKEBONO, escorted ZUIHO, UNYO, CHUYO and MAYA from Truk to Yokosuka; on 3-4 December assisted sinking CHUYO; rescued 130 survivors; then docked at Kure for repairs. (“X” turret probably removed/replaced by two triple 25mm mounts during this refit.)

25 December 1943-4 January 1944:

Led escort of troop convoy from Saeki to Truk.

7-18 January:

Escorted convoys from Truk to Kwajalein and Ponape and back.

1-4 February:

Escorted fleet units from Truk to Palau; then returned to Truk on 8 February.

10-13 February:

Escorted fleet units from Truk to Palau.

16-21 February:

Escorted fleet units from Palau to Lingga.

11 March-1 April:

Escorted convoys from Lingga via Palau to Davao.

8-26 April:

Escorted convoys from Davao via Tarakan and Balikpapan to Saipan.

29 April-19 May:

Escorted convoys from Saipan via Balikpapan and Davao to Tawitawi.

14 May:
Commander Yoshida relieved by Lieutenant Commander Yokota Yasuteru [59] (prev. C.O. TACHIKAZE).

3-8 June:
Escorted 2nd Supply Force from Tawitawi to Guimarras; en route rescued 45 HAYANAMI survivors.

9 June:
Out of Tawitawi to rescue 126 TANIKAZE survivors.

19-20 June: Battle of the Philippine Sea

Escorted Admiral Ozawa's Force A. Assisted the torpedoed SHOKAKU and helped rescue survivors.

14-29 July:

Escorted MAYA on troop transport mission from Yokosuka to Okinawa, then via Manila to Lingga.

12-19 September:

Steamed from Lingga to Kure to pick up FUSO and YAMASHIRO.

22 September-4 October:

Escorted FUSO and YAMASHIRO from Kure to Lingga.

18-20 October:

Escorted fleet from Lingga to Brunei.

23-25 October: Battle of Leyte Gulf

Escorted Admiral Kurita's 1st Diversion Attack Force. Minor damage: on 24-25 October in air attacks due to near-misses and strafing. In Battle off Samar on 25 October took part in torpedo attack on U.S. escort carriers and assisted in sinking of USS JOHNSTON (DD-557).

27-29 October:

Refueled at Coron, then to Brunei.

9-12 November:

Escorted fleet out of Brunei into Sulu Sea in support of Leyte troop transport operations.

15 November:

Desdiv 17 reassigned to Desron 2, Second Fleet.

16-21 November:

With YAHAGI, HAMAKAZE, ISOKAZE and YUKIKAZE, escorted YAMATO, NAGATO and KONGO from Brunei towards Kure. Sunk: torpedoed by USS SEALION (SS-315) 65 miles north-northwest of Keelung, Formosa (26-09 N, 121-23 E), in same series of attacks that also sank KONGO. Blew up and sank with all hands, including Comdesdiv 17 (Captain Tanii Tamotsu [50]).

10 January 1945:

Removed from Navy List.
