28 June 1944:
Completed at Osaka; assigned same date to Desron 11, Combined Fleet, for training. Ship's captain: Lieutenant Commander Onishi Yoshiharu [61] (prev. C.O. ASANAGI).

15 July:

Assigned to Desdiv 43 (UME, TAKE, MATSU, MOMO), Desron 11, Combined Fleet. Became flagship of Comdesdiv 43, Captain Sugama Ryokichi [50].

20 August:

Desdiv 43 reassigned to Escort Squadron 31, Fifth Fleet.

25 October-2 November:
Escorted RYUHO and KAIYO on transport mission from Sasebo to Keelung, then back to Kure.

8-16 November:

Escorted ISE and HYUGA on transport mission from Kure to Manila, but diverted to Spratly Islands instead.

16-20 November:

Joined escort of Admiral Kurita's fleet from Brunei as far as Mako.

5-8 December:

Led escort of troop convoy TA No. 8 from Manila to Ormoc. Minor damage: in air attacks on 7 December.

15 December:
Medium damage:
in air raid on Manila due to hit on bow, then to Hong Kong for repairs.

20 January 1945:

Arrived in Takao from Hong Kong.

22-29 January:
Steamed from Takao to Hong Kong and back.

30-31 January:

Departed Takao, leading KAEDE and SHIOKAZE on aircrew evacuation run to Aparri (Luzon), aborted due to air attack. Sunk: in attacks by U.S. Army B-25s and P-38s 20 miles south of Formosa (22-30 N, 120 E); three direct bomb hits, 77 dead and 36 injured. Survivors, including Lieutenant Commander Onishi and Comdesdiv 43 (Captain Sugama), rescued by SHIOKAZE.

10 March 1945:

Removed from Navy List.
