Initial Command Structure:
Ship's captain: Commander Sugioka Koshichi [49] (prev. C.O. NENOHI). Assigned to Desdiv 20 (YUGIRI, SAGIRI, ASAGIRI, AMAGIRI), Desron 3, First Fleet.

20-26 November 1941:

Desdiv 20 steamed with Desron 3 from Kure to Samah (Hainan).

4-11 December:

Escorted CHOKAI out of Samah in support of Malaya invasion operations, then to Camranh Bay.

16 December:

With cover force for British Borneo invasion.

24 December:
Sunk:
torpedoed by Dutch submarine K-XVI near Kuching, Sarawak (01-34 N, 110-21 E). Aft magazine apparently exploded, severing stern: 121 dead; SHIRAKUMO and Minesweeper No. 3 rescued 120 survivors, including Commander Sugioka (later C.O. ARASHI).

15 January 1942:

Removed from Navy List.
