7-10 June:
Patrolled in Attu-area.

15 June:

With ABUKUMA and WAKABA, scouted Amchitka Island for possible airfield sites.

21 June:
1050: While refueling from FUJISAN MARU off Attu NENOHI detected a submarine 800 meters astern. She cast off at once and backing down fiercely depth-charged it. It was "strongly" believed it was sunk.

22 June:
0145: Departed Chichagof Bay.
0720: Arrived at McDonald Cove. Hereafter made patrols outside that bay.
Combined with FUJISAN MARU.

25 June:
Fifth Fleet Headquarters found NENOHI's report on a submarine sinking interesting given what charts showed was the possible depth of water at those coordinates. They ordered NENOHI to return to survey and chart the depth of that area in hopes of locating the sunken submarine and recovering secret documents and coding materials. At the same it would patrol the place to keep any enemy efforts away. This would be maintained until 3 July.

3 July:
No sunken submarine had been found and NENOHI was released and order to proceed to McDonald Cove to rendezvous with seaplane unit KAMIKAWA MARU.

4 July:
Sunk:
- 1240 Hit by one torpedo starboard amidships from a submarine [ USS TRITON (SS-201) had fired two] while out to escort seaplane carrier KAMIKAWA MARU southeast of Attu, near Agattu Island (52-15 N, 173-51 E). With machinery rooms flooding massively and back nearly broken, capsized (to port actually) two minutes after being hit and sank in five. About a 100 or so men including Commanding Officer Terauchi walked down the starboard side of the capsizing destroyer. This was watched by the enemy submarine barely 1,000 yards away, but it did not molest them. However the waters were deadly cold. The hapless men gave `Three Banzais' as their ship sank but couldn't last long. Only those that managed to get into a boat that was floated away as NENOHI went down survived. Once again the US Navy submarine did no harm to the boat. Simply watched its occupants attempt to move toward Agattu Island -- miles away. This reprieve proved fortunate for the NENOHI remnant for help actually was on the way.

6 July:
- 1417 Destroyer INAZUMA arrived off Agattu Island in heavy fog. She had set out that morning by order of KAMIKAWA MARU which had lost contact with NENOHI after 1220 5 July and was suspicious. The survivors were discovered on the island and a boat was sent to fetch them aboard.
- 1430 Rescue completed. The survivors that had reached the island in the small boat were one petty officer and 35 men. (Upon receiving word of this discovery a fuller search was ordered at 1920 but no more were found) In the end there had been 188 killed or perished in the cold seas, including including DesDiv 21 Paymaster Lt (j.g.)/P (Lt/P posthumously) TsuchihashiKojiro (1941), LtCdr (Cdr posthumously) Terauchi, Torpedo Officer Lt (j.g.) (Lt posthumously) Miyoshi, Gunnery Officer Lt (LtCdr posthumously) Matsuura, Navigator Lt (j.g.) (Lt posthumously) Akune, and Chief Engineer Lt (Eng.) (LtCdr (Eng.) posthumously) Muto; 38 survivors rescued by INAZUMA. [1]

31 July 1942:

Removed from Navy List.
