Initial Command Structure:
Ship's captain: Lieutenant Commander Hatano Kenji. Assigned to Desdiv 30, Desron 6, Fourth Fleet.

29 November-3 December 1941:
Steamed with Desron 6 from Truk to Kwajalein.

8-11 December:
Departed Kwajalein, then with first Wake Island invasion force. Carried SNLF advance landing party.

23 December:
With second Wake Island invasion force. Carried SNLF advance landing party.

31 December 1941-3 January 1942:
Escorted convoy from Kwajalein to Truk.

8-12 January:
Escorted convoy from Truk to Guam.

23 January:
With Rabaul invasion force, then patrol/escort duties out of that base.

9 February:
With Gasmata (New Britain) invasion force.

8 March:
With Lae/Salamua invasion force.

28 March:
With Bougainville invasion force.

7-8 May: Battle of the Coral Sea
Escorted Port Moresby troop convoy.

13-16 June:
Escorted convoy from Palau to Truk.

25 June-1 July:
Escorted KINRYU MARU carrying lead echelon of airfield construction crews from Truk to Guadalcanal.

6-12 July:
Steamed from Truk to Yokosuka, then docked at Sasebo for refitting.

10 July:
Desdiv 30 reassigned to 2nd Surface Escort Division, Fourth Fleet.

14 July:
Desdiv 30 reassigned directly to Eighth Fleet.

14 August:
Departed Yokosuka for Rabaul and the Shortlands.

24 August:
Bombarded Henderson Field.

25 August: Battle of Eastern Solomons
Joined escort of Guadalcanal troop convoy. Sunk: in air attack by U.S. Army B-17 bombers while assisting bombed KINRYU MARU, 40 miles northeast of Santa Isabel Island (07-47 S, 160-13 E). Direct bomb hit in engineering spaces: 41 dead and 11 injured. While flooding and being abandoned, scuttled KINRYU MARU with a torpedo. YAYOI rescued survivors, including Comdesdiv 30 (Captain Yasutake Shiro) and Lieutenant Commander Hatano (to C.O. HAGIKAZE).

1 October 1942:
Removed from Navy List.
