3 December 1943:
Completed at Tokyo; assigned same date to Desron 11, First Fleet, for training. Ship's captain: Commander Mifune Toshiro [52] (prev. C.O. UMIKAZE).

3-7 February 1944:

Departed Kure, then escorted damaged UNYO to Yokosuka.

10 February:

Assigned to Desdiv 31 (NAGANAMI, OKINAMI, ASASHIMO), Desron 2, Second Fleet.

26 February-8 March:

Escorted troop convoy from Ujina to Saipan and Guam. On 29 February assisted in sinking of USS TROUT (SS-202); returned to Japan on 16 March.

20-28 March:

Escorted troop convoy from Yokosuka to Truk.

29 March-2 April:

Escorted transport SANYO MARU from Truk to Saipan.

3-19 April:

Escorted tanker convoy from Saipan via Tarakan to Balikpapan.

29 April-1 May:

Steamed from Balikpapan to Lingga.

12-15 May:

Escorted fleet from Lingga to Tawitawi.

19-20 June: Battle of the Philippine Sea

Escorted Admiral Kurita's Van Force.

8-16 July:

Escorted fleet on troop transport mission from Kure to Okinawa, then to Lingga.

18-20 October:

Escorted fleet from Lingga to Brunei.

23-25 October: Battle of Leyte Gulf

Escorted Admiral Kurita's 1st Diversion Attack Force. On 23 October rescued 530 ATAGO survivors including Admiral Kurita, transferred later to YAMATO. Minor damage: on 24-25 October in air attacks due to near-misses and strafing.

27-29 October:
Refuelled at Coron, then to Brunei. Minor damage: on 28 October due to grounding on reef: speed reduced to 12 knots.

30 October-3 November:

Escorted MYOKO from Brunei to Singapore, then docked for repairs.

26 November-1 December:

Escorted tanker HAKKO MARU from Singapore to Manila.

2-4 December:

Departed Manila escorting HAKKO MARU back to Singapore. Sunk: on 4 December when torpedoed by USS FLASHER (SS-249) west of Palawan Island (13-12 N, 116-37 E). 90 killed, including Commander Mifune; 150 survivors rescued by YURISHIMA and CD No. 17.

10 January 1945:

Removed from Navy List.
