18-22 November 1941:

Desdiv 18 steamed with Desron 1 from Saeki to Etorofu (Kuriles).

7 December:
Escorted Admiral Nagumo's carrier striking force for the attack on Pearl Harbor; detached to guard 1st Supply Force tankers prior to the attack, rejoined fleet after; arrived in Kure 24 December.

8-14 January 1942:

Desdiv 18 escorted carrier force from Japan to Truk.

20 January:

Desdiv 18 escorted carrier force in air strikes on Rabaul.

21 January:

Escorted SHOKAKU and ZUIKAKU in air strikes on Lae/Salamua.

23 January:

Escorted SHOKAKU and ZUIKAKU covering Rabaul/Kavieng landings, then returned to Truk 29 January.

1-8 February:

Escorted carrier force in pursuit of U.S. carriers, then to Palau.

19 February:

Escorted carrier force in air strikes on Port Darwin, then to Staring Bay (Celebes) on 21 February.

25 February:

Departed Staring Bay, escorting carrier force in operations south of Java.

1 March:

Assisted SHIRANUHI in sinking unidentified merchant ship.

5 March:

Air strikes on Tjilatjap; then returned to Staring Bay on 11 March.

27 March:
Desdiv 18 departed Staring Bay, escorting carrier force in Indian Ocean raids.

5 April:

Air strikes on Colombo.

9 April:

Air strikes on Trincomalee.

23 April:

Arrived in Kure from Southern operations, then docked for repairs.

21-25 May:

Desdiv 18 steamed with Desron 2 from Kure to Saipan.

3-6 June: Battle of Midway

Desron 2 escorted Midway troop convoy.

17-23 June:

Desdiv 18 escorted KUMANO, SUZUYA and NICHIEI MARU from Truk to Kure.

28 June-4 July:

With SHIRANUHI and ARARE, escorted CHIYODA on transport mission from Yokosuka to Kiska.

5 July:
Heavily damaged:
by USS GROWLER (SS-215); torpedoed outside Kiska Harbor; bow severed; 10 dead.

26 July-13 August:

After having bow cut off, was towed from Kiska (initially by IKAZUCHI) via Shimushu to Maizuru, then docked for repairs.

15 August:
Commander Tomura (to C.O. MICHISHIO) relieved; command then rotated among various officers while under repair.

31 August 1942-30 June 1943:

Designated "Special Reserve" while under repair in Japan.

15 November 1942:
Lieutenant Commander Yamana Hiroo [55] (prev. C.O. HATSUHARU) appointed ship's captain, with added duties as C.O. of other destroyers under repair.

20 May 1943:
Lieutenant Commander Yamana relieved of added duties.

30 June 1943:

Repairs completed; assigned same date to Desron 11, First Fleet, for training.

1 September:

Assigned to Desdiv 9 (ASAGUMO, SHIRAKUMO, USUGUMO), Desron 1, Fifth Fleet. Became flagship of Comdesdiv 9, Captain Inoue Yoshio [48].

2-9 September:

Steamed from Kure to Paramushiro, then Northern Area patrol/escort duties.

26-30 November:

Steamed from Shimushu via Tateyama to Yokosuka.

3-12 December:
Aircrew transport run from Yokosuka via Saipan to Kwajalein and Wotje.

16-22 December:

Escorted MOGAMI from Truk to Maizuru.

22 December 1943-18 January 1944:

Docked at Maizuru. (“X” turret probably removed/replaced by two triple 25mm mounts during this refit.)

1-3 February:

Steamed from Kure to Ominato, then Northern Area patrol/escort duties.

16 March:
Departed Kushiro, escorting troop convoy to Uruppu Island, aborted when SHIRAKUMO and NICHIREN MARU were torpedoed and sunk.

27 March-3 April:
Escorted troop convoy from Kushiro to Uruppu Island.

31 March:

Desdiv 9 redesignated Desdiv 18.

31 July-2 August:

Escorted NACHI and ASHIGARA from Ominato to Kure.

11-14 August:

Escorted KISO and TAMA on transport run between Yokosuka and Chichi-jima.

14-23 October:

Escorted NACHI and ASHIGARA from Kure via Amami-O-Shima and Mako to Coron.

24-25 October: Battle of Leyte Gulf

Escorted Admiral Shima's 2nd Diversion Attack Force in Battle of Surigao Strait. On 25 October assisted damaged ABUKUMA, removing Rear Admiral Kimura Masatomi [41] to become flagship of Desron 1.

27-28 October:

From Coron, escorted ASHIGARA to Pagdanan Bay, Palawan; then NACHI to Manila.

1-2 November:

Led escort of troop convoy TA No. 2 from Manila to Ormoc.

5 November:
Following U.S. air raid on Manila, rescued 224 NACHI survivors.

9-10 November:

Led escort of troop convoy TA No. 4 from Manila to Ormoc.

13-22 November:

During U.S. air raid on Manila, one killed by strafing; then steamed from Manila via the Spratly Islands to Lingga.

15 November:

Assigned to Desdiv 7, Desron 2, Second Fleet; remained flagship of Admiral Kimura (reassigned same date as Comdesron 2).

29 November-10 December:

Escorted HARUNA from Singapore to Mako (4 December), then escorted convoy from Mako to Camranh Bay.

18 December:

Out of Camranh to assist torpedoed MYOKO.

24-27 December:

Led San Jose bombardment force.

3 January 1945:
Rear Admiral Kimura relieved as Comdesron 2 by Rear Admiral Komura Keizo [45].

10-20 February:

Escorted ISE and HYUGA from Singapore to Kure.

23 February:
Desron 2 flag transferred from KASUMI to YAHAGI.

1 March:

Lieutenant Commander Yamana (to C.O. FUYUZUKI) relieved by Lieutenant Commander Matsumoto Shoohei [59] (prev. C.O. YUZUKI).

10 March:

Assigned to Desdiv 21, Desron 2, Second Fleet.

6-7 April:

Escorted YAMATO from Inland Sea on attack mission towards Okinawa. Sunk: on 7 April in attacks by aircraft of TF 58; lost steering control due to two bomb hits and a near-miss; 17 dead and 47 injured; FUYUZUKI removed survivors, including Lieutenant Commander Matsumoto, and scuttled with two torpedoes, 150 miles southwest of Nagasaki (31 N, 128 E).

10 May 1945:

Removed from Navy List.
