At 0730 departs Liuhe and arrives at Yuansha later that day at 1710. Monitors gunboat USS WAKE (PR-3).

Departs Chichi-Jima still in convoy No. 3506 at this point also consisting of auxiliary storeships MAMIYA and TAKUNAN MARUs, auxiliary transports TAITO and SHOSEI MARUs and IJA transport KAIKO MARU escorted by auxiliary cable layer OSEI MARU, auxiliary minesweeper SHOWA MARU No. 7 and SHOWA MARU No. 8, auxiliary subchasers CHa-54, CHa-56 and CHa-57 and auxiliary netlayer KISHIN MARU.

15 May 1944:
Detached from the convoy at some point and arrives at Iwo Jima.

14 June 1944:
At 0700, departs Chichi-Jima in ‘Yaei Maru’ convoy also consisting of IJA transport YAEI MARU, IJN requisitioned cargo ship (B-AK) TATSUEI MARU and auxiliary transport KYUSHU MARU escorted by subchaser CH-16, auxiliary netlayer KOGI MARU and auxiliary minesweeper TOSHI MARU No. 5.

15 June 1944:
At 0800, minesweeper W-25 and torpedo boat CHIDORI join the escort.

16 June 1944:
In a raging storm, UNKAI MARU No. 10, TATSUEI and KOGI MARUs and CH-16 are separated from the convoy and steam together.

18 June 1944:
At 1220, arrives at Nagaura near Yokosuka.

24 June 1944:
Departs Yokosuka in convoy No. 3624 also consisting of auxiliary transport KYUSHU MARU escorted by minesweeper W-20 and auxiliary subchaser Cha-171.

25 June 1944:
Arrives at Hachijo-Jima.

28 June 1944:
Departs Hachijo-Jima escorted by minesweeper W-20.

29 June 1944:
Arrives at Yokosuka.

4 July 1944:
Departs Yokosuka and arrives at Yokohama later that day.

8 July 1944:
Departs Yokohama and arrives at Yokosuka later that same day.

14 July 1944:
Departs Yokosuka and arrives off Funakata, Chiba Prefecture later that day.

15 July 1944:
Departs Funakata waters and joins convoy No. 3714 that departed Tateyama at 1440 the previous day, consisting of IJA transport NISSHU MARU, IJN requisitioned cargo ship (B-AK) HASSHO MARU and auxiliary salvage ship KATSURAGAWA MARU escorted by kaibokan CD-4, subchaser CH-50 and Navy landing ships No. 2 and No. 105.

18 July 1944:
200 miles NW of Chichi Jima. At about midnight, LtCdr Clyde B. Stevens’ (USNA ’30) USS PLAICE (SS-390) makes a surface radar attack on the convoy. About that same time, UNKAI MARU No. 10, carrying aircraft spare parts, loses contact with the convoy.

NW of Chichi Jima. At about 0200 that same day, LtCdr Albert L. Becker‘s (USNA ’34) USS COBIA (SS-245) torpedoes and sinks straggler UNKAI MARU No. 10. 19 crewmen are KIA.

W of Chichi Jima. At 0650, Becker torpedoes and sinks NISSHU MARU that is carrying 1,500 troops including the 26th Tank Regiment and the 109th AA Unit, ammunition, guns and equipment for the defence of Iwo Jima. Three crewmen, 45 gunners and 48 troops including two tank crewmen are KIA and all 28 tanks lost. HASSHO and KATSURAGAWA MARUs and the escorts rescue almost 1,500 soldiers sailors and crewmen.

10 September 1944:
Removed from the Navy’s list under instruction No. 1067.


[1] LISBON MARU sinks the following day at 30-17N, 123-13E with the loss of three IJA soldiers and 826 POWs. Six or seven POWs manage to escape, assisted by the Chinese. The rest are recaptured by the Japanese.

[2] There were two categories of Zatsuyosen. (Ko) category with an IJN Captain as supervisor aboard and (Otsu) category without.
