Osaka. Laid down by Mihara Zosen Tekkosho K.K. shipyard for Namura Kisen K.K. as an 851-ton cargo ship.

March 1939:
Launched and named UNKAI MARU No. 10.

15 May 1939:
Completed and registered in Kobe.

20 September 1939:
Requisitioned by the IJN.

1 October 1939:
Registered in the IJN as an auxiliary gunboat attached to the Sasebo Naval District under instruction No. 674 and assigned to the 5th Gunboat Division under instruction No. 675. Naval Reserve Captain Ishii Jiro is appointed CO.

China coast, six miles from Tung Fusham Island. At 0704, LtCdr (later Cdr) Rob R. McGregor's (USNA ’29) USS GROUPER (SS-214) fires three unreliable Mark 14 torpedoes at IJA transport LISBON MARU at 3200 yards. The torpedoes either pass under the target or fail to detonate. McGregor fires a fourth torpedo that explodes against LISBON MARU's stern, bringing her to a stop. At 0845, GROUPER fires a sixth torpedo that also misses.

About 1800, UNKAI MARU No. 10 comes alongside the IJA transport and rescues 57 soldiers.

18 July 1944:
200 miles NW of Chichi Jima. At about midnight, LtCdr Clyde B. Stevens’ (USNA ’30) USS PLAICE (SS-390) makes a surface radar attack on the convoy. About that same time, UNKAI MARU No. 10, carrying aircraft spare parts, loses contact with the convoy.

NW of Chichi Jima. At about 0200 that same day, LtCdr Albert L. Becker‘s (USNA ’34) USS COBIA (SS-245) torpedoes and sinks straggler UNKAI MARU No. 10. 19 crewmen are KIA.

W of Chichi Jima. At 0650, Becker torpedoes and sinks NISSHU MARU that is carrying 1,500 troops including the 26th Tank Regiment and the 109th AA Unit, ammunition, guns and equipment for the defence of Iwo Jima. Three crewmen, 45 gunners and 48 troops including two tank crewmen are KIA and all 28 tanks lost. HASSHO and KATSURAGAWA MARUs and the escorts rescue almost 1,500 soldiers sailors and crewmen.

10 September 1944:
Removed from the Navy’s list under instruction No. 1067.


[1] LISBON MARU sinks the following day at 30-17N, 123-13E with the loss of three IJA soldiers and 826 POWs. Six or seven POWs manage to escape, assisted by the Chinese. The rest are recaptured by the Japanese.

[2] There were two categories of Zatsuyosen. (Ko) category with an IJN Captain as supervisor aboard and (Otsu) category without.
