Authors' Notes:
[1] NRT is a ship's cargo volume capacity expressed in "register tons", one of which equals to a volume of 100 cubic feet (2.83 m3). It is calculated by subtracting non-revenue-earning spaces i.e. spaces not available for carrying cargo, for example engine rooms, fuel tanks and crew quarters, from the ship's gross register tonnage (GRT). Net register tonnage (NRT) is not a measure of the weight of the ship or its cargo, and should not be confused with terms such as deadweight tonnage or displacement.

[2] Fitted with four single 12cm deck guns, 0-1 Type 93 twin 13mm MGs, one Type 92 single 7.7mm MG, one 75cm searchlight and 120 mines.

[3] BEATRICE was renamed BIWA MARU and sank at Karimata Strait, Java Sea, Netherlands East Indies after colliding with Army transport SATSUMA MARU on 1 Nov ‘42.

[4] MIZUHO was torpedoed 1 May ’42 by LtCdr. (later Rear Admiral) Robert H. “Bob” Rice’s (USNA ’27) USS DRUM (SS-228). She sank the following day with the loss of 7 officers and 94 men.
