KOKURYU MARU was completed in 1937 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. as a 7, 369-ton passenger-cargo ship ship. Sister ORYOKU MARU was also completed in 1937. In Oct '44, KOKURYU MARU was torpedoed and sunk by an American submarine off Luzon, Philippines. In Dec '44, ORYOKU MARU was bombed and sunk by Task Force 38 carrier planes off Subic Bay, Philippines.
