WAIHORA was completed in 1907 as a cargo ship for the Union Steamship Co. of New Zealand, Ltd, She was sold to Japanese owners in 1927 and renamed TAIRYU MARU. She was requisitioned by the Imperial Army (IJA) in '41 for service as a troop transport. In Feb '44, TAIRYU MARU was bombed and sunk by USAAF heavy bombers off Formosa.
