Osaka. Laid down by Harada Zosen K.K. for Tokaisha K.K. as a 343-tons cargo ship with some cargo space refrigerated.

10 April 1937:
Launched and named TAKACHIHO MARU. [1]

May 1937:
Completed and registered at Tokyo.

7 April 1939:
Her ownership is changed to Nanbo Kisen K.K.

20 August 1941:
Requisitioned by the IJN. Registered as an auxiliary small minelayer attached to the Yokosuka Naval District under instruction No. 1093.

Reassigned to search for SEIYO MARU No. 1 (41, 265 GRT) and bring her to the nearest port under Yokosuka Local Defense Squadron instruction No. 821.

5 April 1942:
Search mission is cancelled under Yokosuka Local Defense Squadron instruction No. 823.

6 April 1942:
Patrols between Niijima and Omaezaki. Due to stormy weather a wire gets entangled in the propeller of auxiliary patrol boat SHIROHIGE MARU No. 1. In the morning meets up with SHIROHIGE MARU No. 1 to assist with removing the wire. At 2100, the wire is removed.

7 April 1942:
Patrols off Izu Peninsula. Assigned to tow SHIROHIGE MARU No. 1 to Shimoda under Yokosuka Local Defense Squadron instruction No. 841. At 1300, begins towing SHIROHIGE MARU No. 1 from Ito Harbor. At 1800, arrives at Shimoda. Thereafter departs Shimoda to resume her patrol.

8 April 1942:
Patrols off Izu Peninsula.

9 April 1942:
Patrols off Izu Peninsula. Arrives at Nagaiso later that day. Assigned to return to Uraga on 10 Apr ‘42 under Yokosuka Local Defense Squadron instruction No. 854.

10 April 1942:
Attached to Yokosuka Guard Force, Yokosuka Local Defense Squadron under Yokosuka Naval District instruction No. 74. Assigned to patrol No. 6 area under Yokosuka Local Defense Squadron instruction No. 858. Departs Nagaiso. At 2125, drops three depth charges at 296° and nine nautical miles of Sunosaki LH (lighthouse).

11 April 1942:

12 April 1942:

3 May 1942:
Continues assigned mission. Scheduled to resupply at 1000, 4 May in Nagaura area under Yokosuka Guard Force instruction No. 70.

Auxiliary gunboat YOSHIDA MARU sustains an engine breakdown 20 nautical miles SE Oyama Atsumi Peninsula and goes dead in the water. At 1500, reports having being hit by a torpedo (not in US records – likely hit by a drifting mine) in 34-30N, 137-20E.

Later that day with auxiliary netlayer KASHI MARU, takes YOSHIDA MARU under tow.

21 February 1943:
At 0645, destroyer YAMAGUMO arrives and takes over the tow. Arrives at Nagoya. Departs there later that day to patrol vicinity area.

[2] MIZUHO was torpedoed at 2315 1 May and hit in port side aft of amidships by one torpedo of two fired by LtCdr (later Rear Admiral) Robert H. Rice's (USNA '27) USS DRUM (SS- 228). She sank at 0416 2 May with the loss of 101 of her crew.

[3] HAKKAI MARU (2921 GRT, ’40) was torpedoed circa 1825 enroute from Kure to Yokosuka by LtCdr Eugene T. Sands' (USNA '30) USS SAWFISH (SS-276). She sank circa 1900 at 34-05N, 137-35E with the loss of 121 members of Nankai Detachment and three crewmen.
