TAIYEI MARU was completed in 1912 as a passenger cargo ship for the Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Line. In '37, she was chartered by the IJA. In '38, she was renamed TAIEI MARU. In Aug '45, TAIEI MARU was undergoing remodelling to a hospital ship when hostilities ceased.
