Banda Sea. At 1341, lookouts aboard LtCdr James A. Adkins’ (USNA ‘26) USS COD (SS-224) sight the smoke of a target at 20,000 yards headed for Ambon, Moluccas. At 1509, COD submerges and Adkins begins an approach at 05-28S, 125-08E. He observes what he takes to be a 20-mm gun on the bow and lets the ship pass.

At 1633, Adkin orders “Battle Surface!” At 11,000 yards, COD engages the “barge” with her deck gun. COD’s gunners fire 22 rounds at the wildly zigzagging target without getting a hit. When the range closes to 9,300 yards. the target returns fired from what appears to be a 3-inch gun in the stern. Her first shot falls 250 yards short of the submarine. At 1644, Adkins clears the deck and dives as the target’s second shell lands about 150 yards away. He decides to attack submerged by moon light with torpedoes.

14 August 1944:
Banda Sea, about 40 miles S of Boeroe Island. At 0155, COD fires four torpedoes and gets three hits that blow the stern off T.129. The bow remains afloat until 0207 when it too sinks at 04-17S, 126-46E. Banda Sea, about 40 miles S of Boeroe Island.
