In 1943, the Japanese adopted the Standard Merchant Type 1C cargo design. The Type 1Cs were based on peacetime designs and used coal-fired reciprocating engines with machinery admidships. They had four deck hatches and double bottoms. 54 were built in 1942, 1943 and 1944.

The Type 1Cs included ANKO, DAIJI, HEIJO, KOMEI, KUNIYAMA, MASASHIMA. RAIZAN, SHIRANE, UNKAI and WAYO MARUs and others.
