Aioi. Laid down by Harima K. K. Zosensho shipyard as a 4,163-tons cargo ship for Shinyo Kisen K. K., Kobe.

17 January 1938:
Launched and named SHINYO MARU. [1]

25 March 1938:
Completed and registered at Kobe.

26 July 1941:
Requisitioned by the IJN as a transport (Ippan Choyosen). [2]

15 October 1941:
Registered in the IJN as an auxiliary transport under internal order No. 1256 and attached to the Sasebo Naval District as an auxiliary transport, (Otsu) category. Her homeport is Sasebo Naval Base. [3]

1 December 1941:
Departs Takao, Formosa (now Kaohsiung, Taiwan) for Yawata, Fukuoka Prefecture.

5 December 1941:
Arrives at Yawata.

7 December 1941:
Departs Yawata for Sasebo.

8 December 1941:
Arrives at Sasebo.

16 December 1941:
Departs Sasebo for Koniya, Amami-Oshima.

18 December 1941:

13 July 1942:
About 15 nms NE of Cape Varella, Indochina. In the early morning, lookouts aboard LtCdr (later Rear Admiral) William E. Ferrall’s (USNA ’27) USS SEADRAGON (SS-194) sight a cargo ship. At 0720, Ferrall attacks and scores one hit on SHINYO MARU. At 0755, the transport sinks by the bow, at 13-04N, 109-39E. Only one crewman is KIA.

10 August 1942:
Removed from the Navy List under internal order No. 1486.
