SHINKYO MARU-Class Auxiliary Transport

(SHINKYO MARU prewar)

This class consists of SHINKYO, ANSHU, SEIKYO, NIKKAI, RAKUTO, RYUKO, KOSHU, DAIDO, KEIKO, KANKO, ZUIKO and YAMABATO MARUs and SHINKO MARU No. 2 GO. They were completed between ’33 and ‘39 for various shipping companies. KOSHU and RYUKO MARUs were requisitioned by the IJA, all the others by the IJN. YAMABATO MARU was converted to an auxiliary cable layer ship, KEIKO, KANKO, DAIDO and ZUIKO MARUs and SHINKO MARU No. 2 GO served as auxiliary gunboats, SHINKYO, ANSHU, SEIKYO and NIKKAI MARUs were first used as auxiliary gunboats and later as auxiliary transports. Finally, RAKUTO MARU was an auxiliary transport. All were lost during the war due to various causes.
