(SHANGHAI MARU, prewar)



In 1913, HANKOW MARU was completed as a passenger- cargo ship for Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Kobe. Her sister ships were SHANGHAI, SYDNEY MARU, CAROLINE MARU and TASMANIA MARU. During the Pacific War, HANKOW MARU was requisitioned by the Imperial Army (IJA). In Sep '43, she was bombed and sunk by an American aircraft off Wewak, New Guinea.
