Osaka. Laid down by Ohara Zosen Tekkosho K.K. shipyard for Marusho Kaiun K.K. as a 1,386-tons cargo ship.

August 1940:
Launched and named NISSHO MARU No. 2.

E 1940:
Completed and registered at Ura, Hyogo Prefecture.

1 December 1941:
Requisitioned by the IJN.

20 December 1941:
Registered in the IJN as an auxiliary gunboat attached to the Sasebo Naval District under instruction No. 1700. Reserve Lt Kanasawa Hyouichi is appointed CO.

30 December 1941:
Innoshima. Starts conversion to military duty at Osaka Iron Works K.K. shipyard. Departs later that day.

31 December 1941:
Tactically assigned to Sasebo Naval District, Guard Force Unit.

1 January 1942:
Tactically assigned to Sasebo Naval District, Guard Force Unit, Sakito 2nd Patrol Force as vessel No. 7 under instruction No. 28.

Departs Tokyo Bay for Inland Sea in a convoy also consisting of government owned passenger ship (C-AP) RASHU MARU. At different times en route the ships are escorted by auxiliary submarine chasers CHa-183 and KAZUMI MARU.

2 March 1945:
Departs Yokosuka for Hachijo-Jima, Izu Shoto (Islands) in convoy as only merchant ship escorted by kaibokan CD-49.

3 March 1945:
About 22 nautical miles ENE of Mikura-Jima, Izu Shoto. At night, Cdr Allen R. Faust’s (USNA ’36) USS TREPANG (SS-412) running on the surface, detects the convoy. About 0400, Munson fires a spread of four torpedoes at the freighter and scores two hits on NISSHO MARU No. 2. At 0500, the transport sinks at 34-05N, 139-54E with the loss of 38 crewmen.

10 May 1945:
Removed from the Navy’s list under instruction No. 417.
