Editorial Notes by Anthony Tully - Managing Editor, CombinedFleet.com

[Note ] The force was cruisers MONTPELIER, CLEVELAND, and DENVER escorted by CONWAY, WALLER, and CONY.

[Note ] In relating the action that follows it appears S.E. Morison inverted both in narrative and map the sequence of which destroyer sank first. However, he correctly positions MURASAME in the lead when the battle begins. However the real-time message March 7 appears to contradict Morison's arrangement. (It should be noted though, that Morison himself in reference 22 notes that the 8th Fleet War Diary contradicts his narrative by implication when giving sinking times of 0115 for MINEGUMO and 0130 for MURASAME.) Its stands to reason then if the destroyers have been transposed, then it may have been MINEGUMO, not MURASAME, hit by USS WALLER'S torpedo fired at 2302. Randy Stone is currently investigating this further for he has obtained a book by MURASAME's Gunnery Officer Koyama Takeshi.

[Note ] It may be noticed that the official lost figure matches Kaneda's 7 March 1943 telegram to the letter; when that was merely an estimate. It is likely that as survivors turned up from Kolombangara or rescue the loss figure went down slightly.
