KOGANE MARU-Class Auxiliary Transport

(SHIROGANE MARU, sistership of KOGANE MARU prewar)

This class consists of KOGANE, SHIROGANE, MAGANE and AKAGANE MARUs completed between May ’38 and Aug ’40 for Nippon Kaiun K.K. All were requisitioned, KOGANE and AKAGANE MARUs by the IJA served as Army transports, SHIROGANE and MAGANE MARUs by the IJN, the former being converted to an auxiliary transport and the latter to an auxiliary gunboat. All were sunk between Sep ’42 and Jan ’44 by US submarines or surface warships.
