Eastern Carolines. At about noon, LtCdr (later Cdr) James D. Grant's (USNA ’31) USS GREENLING (SS-213) torpedoes and sinks transport SHOHO MARU at 05-18N, 160-20E. 20 crewmen are KIA. USS GREENLING evades 18 depth-charges in counterattacks by the escorts.

At 1030, KITAKAMI MARU begins rescue operations and by noon, picks up 106 survivors.

1 January 1944:
At 0940, arrives at Kusaie. Re-provisioned with 4 tons of raw food products.

KITAKAMI MARU departs Truk in convoy No. 7125 also consisting of fleet oiler SATA, tanker HISHI MARU No. 2, ammunition ship NICHIRO MARU and destroyer tender KAMIKAZE MARU escorted by destroyer HAMANAMI and auxiliary subchasers TAKUNAN MARU No. 2 and SHONAN MARU No. 5.

17 February 1944:
150 miles NE of Palau. At about 2200, LtCdr Philip W. Garnett's (USNA ’33) USS SARGO (SS-188) intercepts the convoy. He fires eight torpedoes at SATA by moonlight in a surface attack at 08-50N, 135-50E. Garnett gets one hit and disables the oiler. At 2206, he fires two torpedoes that hit ammunition ship NICHIRO MARU. She explodes and sinks immediately. 53 crewmen, including her CO, Captain (Rear Admiral posthumously) Shimizu Ryutaro (36), are KIA.

18 February 1944:
KITAKAMI MARU begins rescue operations, but the results of her efforts are unkown. Arrives at Palau.

19 February 1944:

Saragan Strait, south coast of Mindanao. At 0809, LtCdr John C. Broach’s (USNA ’27) USS HAKE (SS-256) attacks a convoy and torpedoes and sinks IJA cargo ship NICHIBI (HIBI) MARU (5875 grt) at 05-36N, 125-17E.

NICHIBI MARU was carrying a cargo of gasoline and about 2,000 men of the 22nd Independent Infantry Battalion and 14th Airfield Battalion. 97 troops, four gunners and 22 crewmen are KIA. From 0830~1100, KITAKAMI MARU rescues 644 survivors and arrives at unidentified “Dajangasu”, Mindanao. Transfers 514 survivors to TAKEBE MARU.

The convoy is also provided air cover.

27 July 1944:
At about 0100, LtCdr (later Captain) Bladen D. Claggett's (USNA ’35) USS DACE (SS-247) attacks the convoy and sinks tanker KYOEI MARU No. 2. Five crewmen are KIA. The escorts counterattack and drop 20 depth-charges, all unsuccessfully. At about 1400, the convoy is attacked by aircraft in the Pilas Channel, but suffers no damage. At 1830, the convoy arrives at Zamboanga.

29 July 1944:

Loads fresh water.

24 October 1944:
Fitted with a self-correcting compass and hydrophone testing machine

13 December 1944:
Departs Singapore for St. Jacques, Vichy French Indochina (now Vung Tau, Vietnam).

14 December 1944:
: For unknown reasons, KITAKAMI MARU reverses course away from St. Jacques.

17 December 1944:
Arrives back at Singapore.

30 June 1944 :
Removed from the Navy List.
