KANAN MARU Class Auxiliary Transports and Gunboat

(KANAN MARU, prewar)

This class consists of KANAN and KAHOKU MARUs, both completed in ‘31 as cargo ships for Dairen Kisen. KANAN MARU was requisitioned by the Shipping Administration in Nov ’43 and used as a shared Army transport when torpedoed and sunk by an American submarine in Jun ’44. KAHOKU MARU was requisitioned by the IJN in Sep ’41 and converted to an auxiliary gunboat. She was modified in Dec ‘42 and used as a special transport ship from then. She was torpedoed and sunk by an American submarine in Jun ’43.
