Osaka. Laid down by Harada Zosen K.K. shipyard for Amagasaki Kisenbu G.K. as a 986-ton cargo ship.

10 April 1928:
Launched and named HYAKUFUKU MARU.

August 1928:
Completed and registered in Osaka.

9 September 1937:
Requisitioned by the IJN as a general requisitioned transport (Ippan Choyosen).

22 October 1938:
Registered in the IJN as an auxiliary gunboat attached to the Yokosuka Naval District under Navy’s instruction No. 879. Assigned that same day to the 3rd Gunboat Division. Under Navy’s instruction No. 880. Her CO is Naval Reserve Lt (later Captain) Akagi Takeshi.

12 November 1938:
Departs Sasebo.

April 1939:
Rated as auxiliary gunboat No. 34.

5 May 1939:
Arrives at Shanghai.

1 June 1939:
Naval Reserve Lt Furuyama Shuro is appointed CO.

29 October 1939:
Departs Humen waters, southern China.

Assigned to Vice Admiral Makita Kakusaburo’s (38) Shanghai Special Base Force in Captain Yano Mitoshi’s (42) 13th Gunboat Division also consisting of auxiliary gunboats SHOSEI MARU and UNKAI MARU No. 1, under Navy’s instruction No. 1250.

21 November 1941:
Rated as auxiliary gunboat No. 1 in 13th Gunboat Division.

1 December 1941:
Currently assigned to Shanghai Special Base Force, 5th Warning Corps, 13th Gunboat Division. At 1100 departs Hai Chiao Chen and arrives at Qiqu Liedao island later that same day at 1335.

2 December 1941:

At 0600 departs Ssu Chiao Shan. Later that day, fires four warning shots at a junk and seizes her.

1 October 1942:

China coast, six miles from Tung Fusham Island. At 0704, LtCdr (later Cdr) Rob R. McGregor's (USNA ’29) USS GROUPER (SS-214) fires three unreliable Mark 14 torpedoes at LISBON MARU at 3200 yards. The torpedoes either pass under the target or fail to detonate. McGregor fires a fourth torpedo that explodes against LISBON MARU's stern, bringing her to a stop. At 0845, USS GROUPER fires a sixth torpedo that also misses.

At 1800 auxiliary gunboat UNKAI MARU No. 10 comes alongside the IJA transport and rescues 57 soldiers. At 1810, HYAKUFUKU MARU comes alongside the IJA transport and rescues 348 soldiers. At 2050 auxiliary gunboat HOKOKU MARU arrives.

HYAKUFUKU MARU departs at an unknown time for Shanghai. At 1200 arrives at Shanghai and tethers to Army pier. Disembarks troops and loads boiler water. At 1825 departs Shanghai and arrives at Wusong later in the day at 2050.

3 October 1942:
At 0700 departs Wusong on ASW duties.

4 October 1942:
At 0700 arrives at Tung Fusham. Comes alongside auxiliary gunboat SHOSEI MARU (998 GRT) and embarks 269 POWs rescued from LISBON MARU. Departs Tung Fusham later that day at 1525.

5 October 1942:
At 0600 arrives at Wusong departs 0900, and tethers to Railway pier. Disembarks POWs and departs Wusong at 1105, arriving at Shanghai later that same day at 1330. Tethers to Mitsui pier and loads coal, boiler water and fresh food.

6 October 1942:

Loads fresh water. At 1600 departs Shanghai and arrives at Wusong later in the day at 1700.

About 43 nautical miles NW of Muko-Jima. In the afternoon, LtCdr (later Cdr) Clyde B. Stevens’ (USNA ’30) USS PLAICE (SS-390) running under the surface sights a convoy. At 1630, Stevens fires a spread of four torpedoes and scores two hits on HYAKUFUKU MARU. At 1635, the transport sinks at 28-20N, 141-23E with the loss of 16 crewmen.

10 August 1944:
Removed from the Navy’s list under instruction No. 949.


Authors' Notes :
1] LISBON MARU sinks the following day at 30-17N, 123-13E with the loss of three IJA soldiers and 826 POWs. Six or seven POWs manage to escape, assisted by the Chinese. The rest are recaptured by the Japanese.

[2] There were two categories of Zatsuyosen. (Ko) category with an IJN Captain as supervisor aboard and (Otsu) category without.
