Gyoten Maru Class Transport

EMPIRE PAGODA and sister EMPIRE DRAGON were laid down by the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock Co. in December 1941. Both were captured by the Japanese at the fall of Hong Kong. They were completed in 1943 by Hitachi Zosen, K. K. as cargo ships for the Imperial Army and renamed GYOTEN and GYOKU MARUs. GYOTEN (ex-EMPIRE PAGODA) MARU was torpedoed and sunk by an American submarine NW of Truk in Feb '44. GYOKU (ex-EMPIRE DRAGON) MARU was torpedoed and sunk by an American submarine in the Yellow Sea in Sep '44.
