8 December 1944:
Aioi. Laid down at Harima shipyard as a 9,951-ton type 2TL Standard Merchant Tanker for Nippon Yusen K.K. (NYK Line), Tokyo.

23 April 1945:
Launched and named CHIKUMA MARU.

31 May 1945:
Completed.

10 July 1945:
18 kilometers off Mojizaki, Moji Port. Detonates an aerial mine (either magnetic or acoustic) laid by USAAF 20th Air Force B-29 “Superfortress” heavy bombers below the ship’s bottom. Pumping manages to keep the vessel just afloat.

22 July 1945:
During salvage, strikes a second mine. At 1800, her captain run ss her aground. Seven crewmen are KIA in the two minings.
