AKITA MARU-Class Transport

(AKITA MARU, prewar)


This class consisted of AKITA, MADRAS, NAGANO, TAIKAI, TOMIURA and YAMAGATA MARUs. AKITA MARU was requisitioned by the Imperial Army in '41 and served as a troop transport. She was torpedoed and sunk by Dutch submarine O-19 off Thailand in Jan '42 while MADRAS, TAIAN and YAMAGATA MARUs were sunk during the war by American submarines. NAGANO and TOMIURA MARUs were sunk by American aircraft.
