1B Type Tanker conversion - Class

SHOYU MARU was laid down in ’41 as a 1B Type cargo ship and converted on stocks to an emergency tanker completed in ‘42 for Matsuoka Kisen K.K., Fuchu. Requisitioned by the IJN in Dec ’42 as general requisitioned transport and subsequently general requisitioned tanker, she was torpedoed and sunk by USN submarine in Jan ‘44. A sister, SHOUN MARU, was also built for the same owner and served as an auxiliary transport. She was torpedoed and sunk by USN submarine in Jun ’44.
